CAROLINE H. NEWHOUSE: Inspiration for Career Transition For Dancers

KPM Associates
April 27, 2003

Caroline H. Newhouse, philanthropic "Angel", distinguished artist (paintings and sculptures), member of the Career Transitions For Dancers (CTFD) Board of Directors, and a major benefactor of the annual Gala passed away on Saturday, April 26 at her weekend home in Roxbury, Conn. She was 93. She was the widow of Theodore Newhouse, one of the three founding brothers of the Newhouse communications company.

Mrs. Newhouse was born Caroline Herz in Polch, Germany, and studied art history at the University of Heidelberg. She came to the United States in 1934. Mrs. Newhouse married Theodore Newhouse in 1956. They lived in Manhattan and Roxbury, where Mrs. Newhouse worked in her studio.

Caroline H. Newhouse made a bit of history herself in the early 1970s when she was the first female member to be admitted to the Lambs Club, the nation's first private club for the fine and all the performing arts (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was the second). Mrs. Newhouse received a number of tributes over the years for her art work, which has been exhibited throughout the country.

Her interests extended beyond the world of art. Mrs. Newhouse was a member of the board of New York City Opera and CTFD and has been an important contributor to many leading cultural institutions in America. Beyond helping to preserve and extend organizations, she was interested in the development of individual artists. She sponsored the training of many young ballet dancers. Unheralded, she also helped dancers to receive physical therapy for their injuries.

When Mrs. Newhouse and her husband donated $1 million to Career Transitions - she said that she felt a special bond with dancers, who often served as models for her artworks. "While you sculpt, you talk, and they told me how hard they have to work in order to perform," she said. "There is no time for them to do anything except dance, dance, dance. And at 29, the body doesn't react anymore as it did when you were 19."

Caroline H. Newhouse was the passionate and active, philanthropic "Angel", for CTFD. Through her generosity a Scholarship Fund was established. She served for numerous years as the Co-Chair of the annual Galas including the upcoming 9th Gala - GOTTA DANCE, A Dance Tribute to Hollywood which is to be held on Monday, October 27th at 7:00 pm at City Center. Dinner Chair is Amy Bermant Adler, her granddaughter.

Alexander J. Dube, Executive Director and Cynthia G. Fisher, President stated; "We are profoundly saddened at the loss of the heart of CTFD - Caroline H. Newhouse. Dancers, staff and Board members will sorely miss her wit, wisdom and her compassion. An accomplished artist herself, she understood the cost of true artistry and was a kindred spirit to our dancers. We were blessed to have enjoyed her vision, her support, and most precious of all, her friendship. She was our inspiration. We extend our deepest sympathy to the entire Newhouse family."

Career Transition For Dancers, The Caroline & Theodore Newhouse Center for Dancers with offices in New York and Los Angeles, has helped over 2,500 professional dancers identify their unique talents in preparation for establishing new careers when dance is no longer an option. Since its founding in 1985, the organization has provided more than 32,000 hours of one-on-one career counseling - at no cost - and has awarded over $1.7 million in educational scholarships. CTFD also provides dancers with specialized services that include transition seminars and workshops; peer support groups; resource centers; a toll-free national hotline; a website; and the new National Networking Directory. CTFD moved it's national New York City office to Broadway (Times Square) the end of January. The Caroline & Theodore Newhouse Center for Dancers is now located in new expanded offices to better serve its clients at 165 West 46th Street Suite 701 (at Broadway - the Actor's Equity Building).
