On the recommendation of someone who knows Salsa, I checked out Club Miami in San Jose. They taught a free lesson. The lesson was relatively advanced compared to lessons taught at similar venues. There was a DJ but no band. Most of the crowd was authentic. About half of the people there were dancing, and the other half were sitting around drinking, talking, and watching people dance. Some of the dancers were very good. I had a good time, but I much prefer dancing Salsa to a live band. I didn't stay all that late, so it is possible that the scene picks up later in the evening. The main problem was the floor. It was very sticky. On the other hand, they have put some thought into the dÈcor and have a full complement of flashing colored lights. I arrived a little after 7:30 pm for the lesson. There did not appear to be a cover at this time, but there may be a cover if you arrive after the lesson is over. This is a good policy, as it gives people a financial incentive to learn. A bottle of water cost $3.00. Given that a bottle of water costs $3.50 at Blue Angel in New York, it is possible to calculate the relative cost of living in San Jose as 85.71% of the cost of living in New York City. Or in other words, the San Jose/New York City Salsa Water Index is 0.8571. There is parking nearby for $6.00.
