Embattled GardenPhoto essay by Robert Abrams January 29, 2003 Choreography and costumes by Martha Graham Music by Carlos Surinach Set by Isamu Noguchi Original lighting by Jean Rosenthal Adapted by Beverly Emmons Premiere: April 3, 1958, Adelphi Theatre, New York City Love, it has been said, does not obey the rules of love but yields to some more ancient ruder law. The Garden of Love seems to be threatened by The Stranger's knowledge of the world outside and by the old knowledge of those like Lilith (according to legend, Adam's wife before Eve) who lived there first. Dancers: Elizabeth Auclair, Tadej Brdnik, Miki Orihara, Christophe Jeannot. The brief preview shown during the photo call suggests that this first season in quite some time of Martha Graham's works will be first rate, both in terms of the choreography and the individual performances.
