About the Author:
La Milonga at La Nacional Argentine TangoBy Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower 8/1/02 Thursday, August 1, 2002, La Milonga at La Nacional, 239 West 14th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, 2nd Floor, www.tangolanacional.com , 917.385.9698, 917.691.6399, organized by Coco and Juan Pablo, DJ, Viviana Parra. Beginner lessons, 7 PM, Intermediate lessons, 8 PM. Milonga every Thursday, 9:30 PM - 1:30 AM. Walking into La Milonga at La Nacional, one always has the feeling of becoming an active participant in a Fiesta, a party that could actually occur late at night in Buenos Aires, with Tango-related paintings and sketches, strategically mounted on rose-colored walls, tiny Christmas lights, strung in maypole fashion from the ceiling, an adorable bar, and a pot of fresh, long-stem roses for the ladies. In fact, the rest room area is always decorated with fresh rose petals and candles, a sumptuous, sensual ambiance. Visiting Argentinean performers, such as Susana Miller, (see Roberta's Workshop report) who appeared on the dance floor tonight, and the dynamic roster of Tango musicians, instructors, students, and performers can be seen in close embrace, syncopated Milongas, as well as in Swing and Salsa breaks, enveloped and entranced by the superb sound system and selection of vocal and orchestral dance music. It's never too late to stop at La Milonga at La Nacional for a glass of wine and some magic moments of Pugliese.
