cmDance announces the return of Rocky Mountain Balboa Blowout, the largest Balboa event in the region, October 16 – 18, throughout Denver.

Balboa, named after the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California, where it originated, is a form of swing dance that started as early as 1915 and became popular in the 1930’s-40. The close, upright style of Balboa developed in response to over-crowded dance halls where there wasn’t space for the larger steps typical of other swing styles. The dance is characterized by its minimal upper body movement and quick footwork as dancers move together in close embrace. Balboa is a dance that is great for all ages and skill levels!

This event is an entire weekend of workshops with world-renown instructors, dance competitions, live music from one of the nation's premier swing bands, and all the dancing you can take! Each year dancers come from all over the world to be part of this event and share their love of this historic American dance-form.

cmDance brings in world renowned instructors to teach all levels of balboa classes. This year the instructors including Nick Williams, Sylvia Sykes, Mickey Fortanasce, Kelly Arsenault, Bobby White, Kate Hedin, David Rehm, Shani Brown, Heather Ballew and Javier Johnson.

Friday and Saturday night will feature live music from one of the top names in the swing dance community, Jonathan Stout & His Campus Five featuring Laura Windley on vocals. Saturday evening will also feature a beginner dance class starting at 7:30 PM for those with little to no balboa dance experience. This class will equip you with the skills needed to enjoy dancing that evening.

Full weekend passes are currently $179 at www.BalboaBlowout.com dance passes are $69 and include dances on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening at Denver Turnverein, 1570 Clarkson St. in Denver, 80218. Single day and evening passes are available online and at the door as well.

"The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word." - Mata Hari

Proceeds of the event support the educational arm of cmDance, which provides swing-era dance classes to low-income public schools throughout the Denver Metro Area, bringing the art of dance to almost 10,000 youth every year.
