The Flea Theater announces two weeks of Dance @ The Flea. Featured will be the work of three diverse choreographers selected following their participation in Dance Conversations, the free monthly Flea dance series that has continued the spirited debate about dance and dancers for six consecutive seasons. The choreographers chosen include Jordan Fuchs, Roxanne Steinberg, and africanallstarscollective!/ Nora Chipaumire.

May 6 & 7 at 7pm: Jordan Fuchs presents ONE-OFFs: an evening of improvised dances
A stellar line up of inveterate down town and down south improvisers come together for two nights of exciting improvisational dance performance at the Flea. Curated by Jordan Fuchs the line up includes performance by K.J. Holmes, Jordan Fuchs, Modern Dance Awareness Society, Shua Group, Megan Boyd, Luka Kito, and Rafael Cohen.

May 8 & 9 at 7pm: Roxanne Steinberg presents May We Perhaps…
Dancer Roxanne Steinberg shares an evening with percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, exploring aspects of improvisation and composition in dance and music. Roxanne's fresh and unpredictable approach to movement will contrast, meander and merge with Tatsuya's unique sound which defies category or genre. Set designed by artist Lauren Bon.

May 15 & 16 at 7pm: africanallstarscollective! presents manifestos and other stories!
Nora Chipaumire presents new works exploring the challenging nature of global nomadism, dislocations and loss.

Curators Nina Winthrop and Taimi Strehlow along with Carol Ostrow, The Flea's Producing Director wanted to move the companies featured in Dance Conversations to the next step. "Especially in these tough economic times," says Ostrow, "dance companies need all of the opportunities to perform they can get." Jim Simpson, Artistic Director of The Flea, noted that "The Flea has always been a huge supporter of the downtown dance scene. Don't miss these three dazzling, distinct and definitely different choreographers."

Nina Winthrop (Curator) was thrilled to choreograph Violet Fire, an opera presented at BAM's Next Wave Festival in October 2006. The opera, by composer Jon Gibson and librettist Miriam Seidel, and directed by Terry O'Reilly, received its world premiere at the National Theater of Belgrade in July 2006. Ms. Winthrop formed Nina Winthrop and Dancers in 1991. Her numerous works have been presented in venues throughout New York City and Los Angeles, and her dance films, Stir, Too Close for Conversation, et toi? and Seven Sins, have been screened internationally. The company premiered Constraints I, II and III, an international collaboration between American and Japanese artists, during its New York season at The Flea Theater in June 2007. In addition to curating DCF for the past three seasons, Ms. Winthrop curated the dance film showcase Dance on Film/Film on Dance at Symphony Space in 2004. She was awarded a Bessie Schönberg Choreographers' Residency at The Yard in 2004, a Dancenow/NYC's Silo Artist Residency in 2005, and participated in the Schönberg Choreographers Lab at DTW in 2005. She is on the Board of Directors of New Dance Alliance and was on the selection panels for the 2007 Bessie Schönberg Choreographers' Residency at The Yard and the 2007 Wave Rising Series. A graduate of Bennington College, she danced with Wendy Perron, Susan Rethorst, Yoshiko Chuma, Sally Silvers and Kei Takei, with whom she toured the USA and Japan, and studied with Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham and Deborah Hay.

Taimi Strehlow (Assistant Curator) was previously with HT Chen Dance Company. Before entering the dance world, she was a television producer with A&E, The History Channel and PBS. Her documentary film, "Big Known Names," was screened this year at festivals in New York, Chicago and Red Bank, New Jersey.

The Flea Theater, under Artistic Director Jim Simpson and Producing Director Carol Ostrow, is one of New York's leading off-off-Broadway companies. In May 2004, The Flea received a special Drama Desk Award for outstanding achievement and in June received an Otto for political theater. Since its inception in 1996, The Flea has presented over 90 plays and numerous dance and live music performances. Past productions include Anne Nelson's The Guys, A.R. Gurney's O Jerusalem and Mrs. Farnsworth (New York Times Best Play List 2004), Kate Robin's The Light Outside, Elizabeth Swados' JABU, Talking Band's The Parrot, Karen Finley's The Return of the Chocolate Smeared Woman, the Obie award winning Benten Kozo, as well as premieres of ground breaking playwrights Mac Wellman, Len Jenkin, and risk-taking performance artists Mabou Mines, LAVA LOVE, and the New York Goofs, among many others.
