THE 2007 A.W.A.R.D. SHOW!

Artists With Audiences Responding to Dance
presented by
THE NETA DANCE COMPANY

NEXT EVENT

SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2007 at JOYCE SOHO

The 2007 A.W.A.R.D. Show series continues. The March event will feature work by Erica Rebollar, Ellis Wood/Ellis Wood Dance, Daniel Clifton, and Nelly van Bommel/NØA DANCE. Each artist will present 12 to 15-minutes of material (excerpts from new work and works-in-progress). The program will be followed by a post-performance artist-audience discussion led by guest moderator Judith Stuart, Chair of Dance, Long Island University.

The A.W.A.R.D. Show! is a free, monthly performance series dedicated to the presentation and discussion of new dance work. The series is curated and produced by Neta Pulvermacher in association with Marisa Beatty. Each of the 2007 events will feature the work of four emerging and mid-career choreographers, followed by a moderated discussion between the artists and audience. At the culmination of each event the audience will choose one choreographer/work to be selected as a finalist. The finalist at each event (January through April) will be invited to the final event on May 20, 2007. At the final event, a panel of artists, educators and administrators from the dance, theater, film and visual arts fields, will choose a winner from the four selected finalists. The winner of The A.W.A.R.D. Show! series will receive a $10,000, unrestricted creation/production grant, underwritten by Scott G. Kasen. The aim of The A.W.A.R.D. Show! and the grant attached to this series, is to foster free spirited exploration and creativity in New York City dance. The artists selected for the series were chosen through a countrywide open call for proposals. Out of the 114 choreographers and companies who submitted applications this year, 16 choreographers were selected to participate in the 2007 series.

The March event will take place at Joyce SoHo on Sunday, March 18 at 7:00pm. Joyce SoHo is located at 155 Mercer Street (between Houston and Prince Streets) in New York City. Admission is free. Tickets are only available at the door on the night of the performance - on a first come, first served basis. Directions by Subway: N/R train to Prince Street, 6 train to Bleecker Street, F train to Broadway/Lafayette. For more information about The A.W.A.R.D. Show!, please visit www.netacompany.org.

The January event featured artists Amanda Loulaki/Short Mean Lady, Kiyoko Kashiwagi/Anime Dance Theater, Ming-Lung Yang, and Mei-Yin Ng/MEI-BE Whatever Company. Kiyoko Kashiwagi/Anime Dance Theater was the winner of the January event and will move to the final round. The February event featured artists Kate Weare & Company, Dana Ruttenberg, Evangelos Poulinas, and Elke Rindfleisch/Company Rindfleisch.  Kate Weare was the winner of the February event and will move to the final round. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Mr. Kasen, we are now able to award a grant of $1,000 to the each of the second place artists selected at each event (excluding the final event in May). Choreographer Ming Yang will be awarded this grant for the January event and Dana Ruttenberg will be awarded this grant for the February event.

Upcoming events are Sunday, April 15, featuring work by Ashleigh Leite, Kyle Abraham, Sara Juli, and Jennie MaryTai Liu. The final event will be held on Sunday, May 20.

The A.W.A.R.D. Show! was created after the success of Ms. Pulvermacher's Dance Conversations @ The Flea and in response to the need for a lab-like space in which working dance artists can engage in an open dialogue with the audience about the works presented. It is dedicated to nurturing new works and to the free exchange of ideas, thoughts and opinions between artists and audience.

The Neta Dance Company seeks to expand the relevance and experience of contemporary dance. The company's focus is on creating a comprehensive theatrical art form that approximates how the mind perceives reality (true or imagined), including the chaos inherent in our contemporary existence. By re-thinking the traditional division of labor between visual artists, musicians, media-makers and performers, the company strives to create a new cinematic language that merges movement, music, symbolism, images and spoken language, giving an expression to the human experience and condition. The Neta Dance Company was a company-in-residence at the award-winning Flea Theater in TriBeCa from 2001-2005 and is a 2006 Artist-in-Residence at Dance New Amsterdam (formerly Dance Space Center) in NYC. In May 2005, The Neta Dance Company celebrated 20 years of artistic exploration with NETRO, a two-week, two-program retrospective at the Flea Theater. In 2006, the company inaugurated The A.W.A.R.D. Show! — a new ground-breaking, free monthly performance series presented at Joyce SoHo. In conjunction with Neta Dance Company's performances, tours and media projects, the company also offers free and low cost dance/music workshops as well as lecture-demonstrations for children, teens and adults. They have fostered a special relationship with "Our Children's Foundation" in Harlem. Pulvermacher and her ensemble of seven handpicked dancers collaborate with composers, musicians and visual artists, creating a total theater experience, one that engages all senses. The company has toured throughout the US, Canada, Israel and Eastern Europe (Poland, Belarus, Belgrade), and in Costa Rica. In New York, the company has been presented at Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, The Joyce Theater, Central Park SummerStage, Joe's Pub, Merkin Concert Hall, The Flea Theater, The Kitchen, Dixon Place, the Knitting Factory, Symphony Space, and numerous other venues. Upcoming projects include: Performances Dance Theatre of Harlem Open House, Roger Williams University, University of Florida, and a New York season featuring the premiere of Gotta Go and Underworld at DNA (June 14-17, 2007).

Neta Pulvermacher (Founder/Curator) was born and raised in Kibbutz Lehavot Habashan, Israel. She graduated from Juilliard in 1985 and holds an MFA from the ADF/Hollins University new program. She founded The Neta Dance Company in 1987 and since then has choreographed over 55 works for her company and for numerous ballet and modern companies. Ms. Pulvermacher is an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Florida. She has choreographed for director, Mira Nair's feature film, The Namesake, which will be released in March of 07. Most recently Ms. Pulvermacher was invited to the White House for the inauguration of the Global Cultural Initiative.

The A.W.A.R.D Show! is a production of the Neta Dance Company with the support of LMCC's Manhattan Community Arts Fund, The Bossak-Heilbron Charitable Foundation, Maxine Greene Foundation, University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance, CS Investors, and the generous contributions of Scott G. Kasen.

The creation of Joyce SoHo was made possible by the magnanimous support of the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust. Altria Group, Inc. is the 2006-2007 Season Sponsor of The Joyce Theater.
