It's no surprise that the basic move in West Coast Swing is called the ‘Sugar Push', a sweet, supple show of strength to six counts. The Gotham Swing Club offered their members three distinct hours of instruction, and an hour eating break, before the Party began. The classes were large, and lively, with the participants eager to learn. Just a few steps from Club 412, we found a local Irish Pub with Burgers to Beef Bourguignonne, and the requisite large panel TV sports fare. Hold the mint julips and fancy hats; this is after all, home to the NY classic, the Belmont. Dancing shoes, whether womens' black suede, or men's white bucks, seemed utterly appropriate. Happily heading back to the Party, we were welcomed to the rousing music of DJ Brian Kidd, a welcome newcomer from Texas. The superb sound encouraged the huge crowd to swirl and swing with calm confidence. Technique was excellent, as the men turned their ladies with ease and aplomb. The women, serene and strong, tossed their heads, and turned a delicate foot, with savvy East Coast chic, mixed with West Coast tranquility. Several dancers gave tribute toTybaldt Ulrich, the 2008 World Hustle Champion, crediting his teaching for their expertise in West Coast Swing. He is one of the many outstanding instructors at Stepping Out Studios. One dancer, a professional instructor, drove down from Norwalk Ct. for the cosmopolitan, charming company. Whether channeling a fresh Buddy Holly, or a retro Ginger Rodgers, the dancers displayed sparkle and verve. Later in the evening, a Jack and Jill compettion was held, as the finest dancers flew around the floor with flair and finesse. Diamond point turns, fluid forms, and deft footwork dazzled the crowd. The top three men and women were delighted to win and spun off to a line round robin, with everyone on their feet.
