DANCE AT THE TANK SPRING 2009 NEW WORKS SERIES

THE TANK presents cakeface in the world premiere of vice. (with mary kate). A new peformance art based company, cakeface includes a network of multifaceted artists ranging from digital sound engineers to graffiti artists committed to art as a product for mass culture consumption. cakeface rejects the notion of art entitlement, and promotes its work as a consumer good.

Inspired by grating encounters with "preachy vegans," vice. (with mary kate) probes that which makes us feel "badass." The work delves into the behaviors we adopt despite knowledge of their negative implications, including but not limited to ruthless carnivorous indulgences. Text and music mingle throughout as well as vocal samplings from a motivational badass, Popeye's meat hoarding scam artist pal: Wimpy The Moocher. vice. (with mary kate) is performed by Elle Chyun, Jeso O'Neill and Amanda Szeglowski with music by DJ Tony Conquerrah, costumes by Elle Chyun and lighting design by Amanda K. Ringger.

Amanda Szeglowski, global paradigm architect, runs the carnival, cakeface. Amanda served as Managing Director/Dancer for Ellis Wood Dance for four years, performing with the company throughout NYC as well as on tour in locations such as Portugal, Germany, San Diego and Washington DC. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of South Florida with a BA in Dance Studies and Minor in Business Administration. During the daylight hours, she is the Manager of Corporate Development and Public Relations for Dance New Amsterdam. Amanda founded cakeface in June 2008 so she could choreograph, perform and produce visual art as a consumer good. www.cakefaceart.com
