San Gabriel, CA – July 15, 2008 – Homework Academy of East Los Angeles proudly presents their 1st Annual Gala Benefit Concert to be held at the historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse at 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 2, 2008. The afternoon features a colorful panorama of the traditional "Quermez" (Booth Fair) and a gorgeous Art Exhibit by renowned Artist Lalo Garcia. The evening also includes a spectacular Gala Concert at 6:00 PM, featuring Mexico's best female vocalist of the Mexican Popular Song, Eugenia Leon. The concert promises a modern perspective of Latin rhythms from the band Quetzal combined with a strong influence of present day Mexican folk music and dance.

The anticipated talent line-up begins with a dynamic presentation of this year's best Mariachi revelation, Mariachi San Miguel, accompanied by California's premier folk dance ensemble, Pacifico Dance Company. Guiding us through this wonderful evening is renowned Comedian Rudy Moreno with special guest Comedian Gilbert Esquivel. The first act of the program includes Conjunto Norteño: Los Cadetes de Linares that carry a proud tradition that goes back 5 decades. Concluding the first act is a very promising local rock band, La Libertad. The second act will commence with the nine piece ensemble band, Quetzal. The program will begin to take an interesting turn as our premier Mariachi Voz de America present a more traditional essence of Mexican folklore accompanied by the young Mexican folk troupe, Ballet Folklorico Resurreccion. The culmination of the event will be led by featured singer Eugenia Leon and her musicians directly brought from Mexico City. Eugenia Leon will conclude the gala concert accompanied by Mariachi Voz de America with a beautiful sampling of Mariachi songs.

This non-profit organization, known as Homework Academy of East LA, is a Community Supplemental Education Program. "Supplemental Education" is defined as any time spent, beyond the normal school day, working on academic skills. Homework Academy provides extended rigorous Supplemental Education on a daily basis for the children in the community.
The Mission of Homework Academy is: to assist children in the development of their academic, social, and emotional well being by providing a quality diverse supplemental learning environment and to involve the parents in the education of their children.

Homework Academy of East Los Angeles was conceived, formed and incorporated by Daniel Perez, a veteran math teacher of 12 years with the Montebello Unified School District, in February of 2006. Mr. Perez vision was to build a grassroots organization which would provide daily, extended, comprehensive, rigorous academic assistance, with low student- tutor ratios, to the children of the families in the communities of East LA and Montebello. Mr. Perez realized that the families of these communities would not be able to afford such premium services. It was at this point where Mr. Perez decided to take the great risk of offering these services to the children and youth in the community.

Since February of 2006, Homework Academy has served over 200 students from the community, spanning 2 ½ academic years. During this time funding has been very scarce. However Mr. Perez continued the vision of Homework Academy. He has invested thousands of dollars to keep the program running. Our 1st Annual Gala Benefit Concert will provide a much needed infusion of funding to keep Homework Academy alive. Recently Mr. Perez was diagnosed with cancer. This obstacle has not deterred him from maintaining the vision of Homework Academy. Mr. Perez will beat cancer and will lead Homework Academy towards becoming a long standing community institution.
