Susan Wagner High School Big Band

I attended a Department of Education event where I had the pleasure of hearing the Susan Wagner High School Big Band perform. The band had about 25 musicians, including a 17 piece brass section. The students played with enthusiasm and skill. And volume. With 17 horns, I felt moved, almost literally. The musical selections were conducive to Foxtrot and Lindy Hop. Had they been playing at a dance venue, the floor would have likely been full. To ensure the survival of dance, we need to train the next generation of dancers, but we also need to train the next generation of musicians. Susan Wagner High School, located in Staten Island, clearly is succeeding in its efforts. I think that any Swing venue looking for ways to create interest would be well served to consider the Susan Wagner High School Big Band for a guest spot.
